I am a Tenured Researcher at the Institute of Heritage Sciences (INCIPIT) of the CSIC, where I specialize in anthropology of music and sound. My international career has been quite diverse, with extensive postdoctoral experience between Portugal, as a researcher at NOVA University Lisbon, and the United Kingdom, at Queen’s University Belfast.
In 2020, I joined INCIPIT as a Ramón y Cajal senior postdoctoral researcher, later consolidating my position as a Tenured Scientist. I earned my PhD in Anthropology from the University of Barcelona in 2008, which I completed after my predoctoral training as an FPU fellow at the Institució Milà i Fontanals of CSIC.
Throughout my academic journey, I’ve worked across various institutions, establishing a rich dialogue between different disciplines while keeping music and sound as the core of my research. My work has evolved from studying music and identity relationships in migratory contexts to analyzing sound and musical cultures in urban environments. I’ve placed special emphasis on music’s role in urban revitalization and the impact of tourism on city soundscapes.
Currently, I focus on two main research areas: the intersection of heritage, conflict, and participation, and the study of festive celebrations’ material dimension and their influence on the Galician rururban cultural landscape.
From 2018 to 2022, I directed a project funded by the Fundaçao para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Portugal) on tourism’s impact on Lisbon’s soundscapes (Sounds of Tourism). Now, I lead two projects as Principal Investigator: «HabitPAT» (2021-2025), funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, which examines contradictions in intangible heritage safeguarding policies, and «PALCOS» (2022-2025), funded by the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN), focusing on the relationship between material culture and festivities in rururban Galicia.
My academic output includes a monograph, two edited volumes and numerous articles in prestigious international journals. I’ve presented my research at important international conferences and given seminars at institutions across Europe, Africa, and America.
I have extensive research management experience, having been part of the Spanish Society for Ethnomusicology (2006-2016). Since October 2024, I serve as president of the Galician Anthropology Association (AGANTRO). I am a member of prominent international scientific societies and supervise doctoral and master’s theses. Additionally, I am the scientific coordinator of XEITO, INCIPIT’s Ethnographic Creation Laboratory.
